Charlotte controls tempo early and maintains separation

Charlotte defeated East Carolina 68-56 on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026, using a first-half advantage to set the game’s direction and limiting the Pirates’ efficiency over 40 minutes.

The 49ers led 36-25 at halftime and finished with a 12-point win after outscoring East Carolina 32-31 in the second half. Charlotte held the lead for nearly the entire game and built its largest margin to 13 points.

Bonke and Bradford provide scoring foundation

Anton Bonke scored 12 points to pace Charlotte and added nine rebounds, giving the 49ers steady production on both ends. Ben Bradford also scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, though he needed 14 field-goal attempts to reach that total. Dezayne Mingo added 10 points as Charlotte placed three players in double figures.

Charlotte’s scoring profile reflected balance rather than one high-usage centerpiece. As a team, the 49ers shot 40% from the field (25-of-63) and made seven 3-pointers (7-of-26). They also generated 14 offensive rebounds, creating extra possessions that helped sustain scoring even when shots did not fall at a high rate from deep.

Second-half run turns a tight stretch into cushion

The defining sequence came after halftime. Charlotte used a 9-2 run in the second half to stretch a two-point edge to nine, restoring control during a period when East Carolina was attempting to close the gap.

Bonke produced 10 of his 12 points after the break, giving Charlotte a dependable interior scoring option during that push. Overall, Charlotte committed eight turnovers—four fewer than East Carolina—and converted the turnover margin into a 16-6 edge in points off turnovers.

Riley carries East Carolina; bench scoring keeps Pirates competitive

East Carolina was led by Jordan Riley, who finished with 20 points and two steals. The Pirates also received 16 points off the bench from Corey Caulker. Giovanni Emejuru added a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Pirates’ challenge was efficiency. East Carolina shot 35% from the field (19-of-55) and 20% from three-point range (4-of-20). The team went 14-of-23 at the free-throw line, leaving points unclaimed in a game where sustained scoring runs were difficult to assemble.

  • Final score: Charlotte 68, East Carolina 56
  • Halftime: Charlotte 36, East Carolina 25
  • Team shooting: Charlotte 40% FG; East Carolina 35% FG
  • Rebounding: Charlotte 43, East Carolina 38 (14 offensive boards for Charlotte)

Charlotte’s combination of a double-digit halftime lead, controlled turnovers, and second-chance opportunities provided the structure for a wire-to-wire home win.
