Transit Operations Update

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has officially resumed its normal operating schedule for all bus and rail services as of Wednesday, January 28, 2026. This return to full capacity comes after a challenging week during which a significant winter storm caused widespread service suspensions and limited operating hours. While the transit system is back to its standard frequency, the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) meeting originally scheduled for today, January 28, has been canceled.

  • The LYNX Blue Line has returned to normal frequency, with the first trains departing early this morning.
  • All local bus routes, including those in Eastway and Ballantyne that were previously suspended due to road conditions, are now operational.
  • Express Bus service has resumed to accommodate commuters traveling from the surrounding suburbs into Uptown.

Transit officials urge riders to remain cautious as temperatures are expected to stay near freezing throughout the day. Commuters should be mindful of potentially slippery spots on light rail platforms, at bus stops, and along sidewalks leading to transit hubs. For those using the CATS-Pass app, real-time tracking is active, though minor delays may still occur as operators navigate remaining icy patches on secondary roads.

Road Conditions and Driver Safety

While major thoroughfares such as I-77, I-85, and Independence Boulevard have been cleared and treated, the National Weather Service warns that the risk of black ice persists. Local crews have distributed more than 30,000 pounds of ice melt across the region to stabilize the morning commute, but shaded areas and elevated surfaces remain hazardous. In alignment with Charlotte’s Vision Zero safety goals, the Department of Transportation recommends the following for today’s drive:

  • Maintain increased following distances to account for slick pavement.
  • Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns on secondary neighborhood streets where ice may still be present.
  • Be alert for pedestrians who may be walking in the roadway to avoid uncleared sidewalks.

Infrastructure Projects and Community Meetings

Beyond the immediate weather recovery, several major infrastructure projects continue to shape the local commute. The I-485 express lane project on the southwest side of Charlotte is nearing completion, and preliminary engineering is underway for major intersection improvements at US 21 (Statesville Road) and Gilead Road. These projects are part of a broader effort to mitigate long-term congestion as the city continues its rapid growth into 2026.

Finally, residents in the northern part of the county are encouraged to attend a public meeting regarding the CATS Fare Modernization Program tonight, January 28, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Cornelius Town Hall. The meeting will cover proposed changes to the fare system, including the introduction of required fares for the Gold Line streetcar and new digital payment validators. This is a critical opportunity for the community to provide feedback on the proposed $2.20 flat fare for local transit services.
