Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Today

Today, Monday, January 19, 2026, Charlotte comes together to celebrate the life and enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While the annual parade took place over the weekend, the city’s major cultural institutions and community organizations have a full slate of events scheduled for the federal holiday. Residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in a day of reflection, artistic expression, and community action across the Queen City.

Instruments for Change at the Harvey B. Gantt Center

The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture is hosting its flagship annual celebration, titled "Instruments for Change." This year’s theme explores the profound connection between creative expression and social activism. The center is open to the public for free from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., offering a multi-faceted program suitable for all ages.

  • Jazz Greats Exhibition: View the "Classic Photographs from the Bank of America Collection," featuring 33 striking black-and-white portraits of jazz legends from the 1920s to the 1980s.
  • Interactive Workshops: Participate in screen-printing with MacFly Fresh or join a community journaling session titled "Strokes of Freedom."
  • Film & Performance: Enjoy screenings of the animated film "Our Friend, Martin" and the drama "Rustin." Live performances throughout the day include a special dance production by JOYEMOVEMENT.
  • Panel Discussions: Engage with local scholars and artists during moderated talks focusing on civil rights issues within the current social-political climate of Charlotte.

MLK Family Day at Levine Museum of the New South

Located at One Independence Center on North Tryon Street, the Levine Museum of the New South is hosting its popular Family Day Celebration from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This free event is designed to introduce younger generations to Dr. King’s vision through storytelling and hands-on activities.

  • Storytime Sessions: Scheduled for 10:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 12:00 p.m., these sessions feature children’s books that reflect on Dr. King’s life.
  • High-Energy Performances: The museum will host live music and dance from Jazz Arts, Mixed Metaphors Productions, and the powerful rhythms of Drums 4 Life.

Youth Excellence and Community Action

Beyond the museums, the city is celebrating student talent and civic responsibility. At 1:00 p.m., the Charlotte Ballet hosts the annual CMS Arts and Writing Showcase. This awards program highlights the creative works of Charlotte-Mecklenburg School students, including visual art, spoken word, and musical pieces inspired by the Civil Rights Movement. Additionally, for those looking to give back, the "MLK Service Day Clean Up" organized by Keep Charlotte Beautiful is taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. across six locations in the city’s Corridors of Opportunity, turning the holiday into a "day on, not a day off."
