Overtime lifts Charlotte past Temple in Philadelphia

Charlotte earned an 80-76 overtime win over Temple on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026, at Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, tightening the race near the top of the American Athletic Conference standings. The 49ers improved to 12-9 overall and 6-2 in league play, while Temple fell to 13-8 and 5-3.

The game was closely contested throughout and remained unresolved through regulation. Temple carried a 34-31 lead into halftime and the teams were tied at 68 after 40 minutes before Charlotte outscored Temple 12-8 in the extra period to secure the road win.

Bonke’s efficiency and Charlotte’s rebounding edge

Anton Bonke led Charlotte with 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting and added nine rebounds. Dezayne Mingo posted 19 points and 10 assists, pairing perimeter shot-making with playmaking and getting to the line frequently. Damoni Harrison added 16 points, including three made three-pointers, providing a third scoring option in a game that demanded consistent production.

Team-level numbers reflected a narrow but meaningful set of advantages for Charlotte. The 49ers shot 48% from the field (26-for-54) compared with Temple’s 44% (21-for-48). Charlotte also held a significant edge on the glass, 34-26, and turned that margin into additional possessions in a game decided in overtime.

Temple, meanwhile, converted free throws at a higher rate—93% (27-for-29) to Charlotte’s 68% (19-for-28)—keeping the Owls within one possession across multiple late-game sequences.

Temple’s balanced scoring keeps it tight

Temple received 21 points from Derrian Ford, who also recorded four assists. Jordan Mason scored 20 points, while Aiden Tobiason finished with 16 points and four assists. The Owls’ production was spread across multiple scorers, and their ability to consistently reach the free-throw line helped offset Charlotte’s rebounding and shooting efficiency.

  • Halftime: Temple 34, Charlotte 31
  • End of regulation: 68-68
  • Overtime: Charlotte 12, Temple 8

What the result means in conference play

With the win, Charlotte moved to 6-2 in AAC play, strengthening its position in the upper portion of the standings as the schedule turns deeper into the conference slate. Temple’s loss dropped it to 5-3, increasing the importance of upcoming games against league opponents where one-possession margins and late execution frequently decide outcomes.
