Investigation began after victim arrived at hospital with critical injuries

A 26-year-old Charlotte man has been charged with murder after a 23-year-old woman died following what police described as life-threatening injuries.

Police opened the investigation at about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, after learning the woman had arrived at a Charlotte-area hospital in critical condition. Detectives later connected the case to a residence on the 14000 block of Whistling Teal Drive in northeast Charlotte, near Interstate 85, where investigators and crime-scene personnel were seen working over the weekend.

The victim was identified as Serenity Tate, 23. She later died at the hospital, prompting detectives to reclassify the case as a homicide investigation.

Suspect identified, interviewed, and booked into the Mecklenburg County jail system

The suspect, Demontrez Breelove, 26, was identified the next day and interviewed by homicide detectives at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Law Enforcement Center. After that interview, he was taken into custody and charged with murder.

In addition to the murder charge, Breelove also faces an obstructing justice charge listed in county records. He was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and was reported held without bond at the time of initial reporting.

Authorities have not publicly detailed the nature of Tate’s injuries or the circumstances that led to them, and no additional information was released on a potential motive.

What is known so far — and what remains unclear

  • Date investigators were alerted: Saturday, January 24, after Tate arrived at a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

  • Location tied to the investigation: A home on Whistling Teal Drive in northeast Charlotte, near I-85.

  • Victim identified: Serenity Tate, 23.

  • Suspect charged: Demontrez Breelove, 26, charged with murder; an additional obstructing justice charge is listed in county documents.

  • Key unanswered questions: How the injuries occurred, whether others were present, and whether any prior calls for service are tied to the address.

The investigation was upgraded to a homicide after the victim died at the hospital, a standard procedural step that shifts the case to homicide detectives and expands forensic review.

Next steps in the case

In the early stages of homicide investigations, detectives typically continue gathering physical evidence, conducting interviews, and reviewing records that may help clarify timelines and circumstances. Court proceedings, including initial appearances and any bond determinations, can also provide a clearer outline of the allegations being advanced by prosecutors.

No further case details were released publicly as of the most recent updates.
