Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to restore normal Thursday schedule after weeks of winter disruptions and remote learning

Regular operations set to return Feb. 5 as transportation and activities resume countywide
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will return to a regular school-day schedule on Thursday, Feb. 5, restoring normal start times, bus service and campus operations after an extended period of winter-weather disruptions across Mecklenburg County.
District leaders said the return to normal follows ongoing monitoring of road and campus conditions after multiple rounds of wintry precipitation and lingering ice that repeatedly affected school operations in late January and early February.
What changes Thursday — and what families should expect
CMS announced that schools will operate on their standard bell schedules Thursday. Bus transportation is expected to run, though the district warned that routes may proceed cautiously and that delays remain possible as drivers navigate secondary roads and bus stops.
The district also indicated that before-school and after-school programs will operate as normal Thursday, along with other district programming typically tied to a regular school day.
- Regular school schedule for Thursday, Feb. 5
- Bus service operating, with caution and possible delays
- Before- and after-school programs operating as usual
- Middle school athletics returning to normal operations
- High school athletic events to be rescheduled
Context: a prolonged stretch of altered instruction
Thursday’s return follows a remote learning day on Wednesday, Feb. 4, when CMS buildings were closed to students and the public and instruction was delivered asynchronously, without live online classes. During that remote day, before- and after-school programs were canceled and athletic and extracurricular events were slated for rescheduling.
The February changes came on top of a broader run of interruptions tied to winter conditions, including days when schools were closed, days conducted remotely, and days that operated on delayed schedules. District communications during the disruptions emphasized route checks, roadway conditions and campus clearing efforts as factors in the timing of reopening.
Calendar pressure and an emergency board meeting
The repeated disruptions have also raised questions about how CMS will ensure required instructional time is met over the remainder of the 2025–26 school year. District leaders scheduled an emergency virtual Board of Education meeting for Wednesday evening, Feb. 4, to consider academic calendar adjustments intended to recover lost in-person time.
Among the options discussed publicly ahead of the meeting: converting planned early release days into full instructional days, including the early release day on Feb. 11 and another scheduled for April 29.
CMS has urged families and staff to allow extra travel time and use caution as in-person operations resume.
What to watch next
Families can expect follow-up details from schools and the district regarding any rescheduled high school athletic events and any board-approved calendar changes. For Thursday morning, CMS is asking drivers, students and staff to plan for possible transportation delays even as the district returns to a standard schedule.
