Charlotte police arrest Tyreel Deshun Johnson in months-long series of car break-ins at hotels, apartments

Arrest follows cases reported from October through January

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a Charlotte man investigators allege is connected to a string of vehicle break-ins reported across the city over several months. The suspect, identified as Tyreel Deshun Johnson, faces multiple charges tied to incidents at apartment complexes and hotels, authorities said.

Investigators have charged Johnson in multiple cases dating from October through January. The reported locations include an apartment complex and several hotels, including a Holiday Inn and the Hampton Inn and Suites in the Steele Creek area. Police also linked Johnson to a break-in reported in December at the Sheraton in Uptown.

Victims describe property damage even when nothing was taken

In the Uptown hotel incident, a visitor from Raleigh, Marvin Hicks, said he discovered his vehicle had been damaged the morning after attending a holiday gathering. Hicks said a window had been broken and the interior appeared to have been searched. He reported the damage to police and was told other vehicles at the same hotel were also targeted that night.

Hicks said nothing of significance was taken from his truck, but the broken window still required replacement and cleanup, creating an out-of-pocket cost and additional disruption to travel.

What police say the case includes

  • Multiple criminal cases connected to vehicle break-ins reported over several months
  • Incidents alleged at both apartment complexes and hotel parking areas
  • A reported pattern that investigators say spans from October through January

“I walked down there and found out the window had been busted out.”

Court timeline and bond

Police said Johnson was granted a $50,000 bond. Court records referenced in the case indicate he is scheduled to appear again on March 17, 2026.

The charges are allegations. Under the U.S. legal system, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Context: why vehicle break-ins can have outsized impacts

Even when theft is limited or items are not taken, vehicle break-ins frequently leave victims dealing with immediate costs for window replacement, potential interior damage, and time-consuming insurance and repair arrangements. Investigations into multi-location patterns can also involve coordinating incident reports across different parts of the city and reviewing evidence linked to separate dates and sites.
