Charlotte Symphony music director Kwamé Ryan wins first Grammy for Houston Grand Opera’s recording of Intelligence

A Charlotte-based conductor earns the recording industry’s highest honor
Kwamé Ryan, music director of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, has won his first Grammy Award, adding a major international milestone to a tenure that began with his appointment to lead the orchestra starting with the 2024–25 season. The award was presented at the 68th Grammy Awards ceremony held in Los Angeles on February 1, 2026.
Ryan received the honor in the classical field for Best Opera Recording for Heggie: Intelligence, a recording of the opera by composer Jake Heggie with libretto by Gene Scheer. The winning album reflects a major collaborative production centered on Houston Grand Opera’s staging of the work.
The award-winning project: an opera premiered in 2023 and released in 2025
Intelligence was recorded live during its world premiere performances in fall 2023 at Houston’s Wortham Theater Center and later released in August 2025. Ryan conducted the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra for the recording. The cast includes principal soloists Jamie Barton, J’Nai Bridges and Janai Brugger, among others involved in the production.
The Grammy category recognizes a specific set of credited contributors: conductor, principal soloists and album producer(s), and for world premieres, the composer and librettist. The award for Heggie: Intelligence places Ryan among a small group of conductors whose work is recognized through recording-centered evaluation, distinct from concert performance alone.
What the win means for Charlotte’s orchestra leadership
Ryan was announced as the Charlotte Symphony’s next music director on December 12, 2023, following guest-conducting appearances with the orchestra in January 2023 and November 2023. His appointment begins formally with the 2024–25 season and was structured as a four-year contract.
While the Grammy honors a project created outside Charlotte, the recognition arrives as the orchestra builds its artistic identity under a music director whose résumé spans opera and symphonic work in North America and Europe. The award is also notable in a local context: Ryan’s selection marked a first for the Charlotte Symphony in its long history, reflecting a leadership change closely followed by regional arts audiences.
