Service plans shifted as conditions deteriorated

Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) announced a delayed start for Sunday service as wintry weather created hazardous travel conditions across the region. The agency initially planned to begin service at noon Sunday, Jan. 25, while keeping field supervisors positioned throughout the system to monitor road conditions in real time.

As the storm evolved, CATS later moved from a delayed start to a full suspension of all Sunday transit service. The updated plan called for transit operations to resume Monday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m., with continued detours possible on routes where roadways remained hazardous. CATS also said there would be no express bus service Monday due to the later start.

Rail impacts: Gold Line suspended; Blue Line preparations continued

CATS confirmed that the Gold Line streetcar was suspended for the weekend, citing predicted roadway conditions that would not allow safe travel along the corridor. The agency also stated that a bus bridge—typically used to substitute buses along a rail route during rail disruptions—would not operate because of the same road-safety concerns.

While revenue service was suspended Sunday, CATS reported that Blue Line ice cutter trains continued operating to prepare the corridor for the planned return to service on Monday.

What riders were told to expect

CATS urged riders who needed to travel during the storm period to anticipate delays and detours tied to changing conditions. The agency directed customers to use its trip-planning and rider-information tools for locating available stops and tracking detours as they developed.

  • Sunday, Jan. 25: all transit services ultimately suspended for the day.
  • Monday, Jan. 26: service planned to begin at 10 a.m.; express bus service not operating.
  • Gold Line: suspended for Saturday–Sunday; no bus bridge in place.

Context: ice-driven travel risks across the Carolinas

The Charlotte-area service changes occurred as a winter storm brought sleet and freezing rain into the Carolinas, a combination that can quickly create a thin ice layer on bridges, overpasses, and untreated road surfaces. Transportation agencies across the region warned that driving conditions could become dangerous or, at times, impassable as precipitation continued and temperatures remained low enough for ice to persist.

CATS’ changes were framed around roadway safety—both for transit vehicles and for riders boarding and exiting buses and trains amid slippery conditions.

What to watch next

With service resuming on a delayed schedule Monday morning, the primary operational variables will be remaining ice, localized trouble spots that force detours, and whether conditions allow a return to normal headways and routing. Riders planning Monday trips should allow extra time and confirm route status before traveling.
