Public Hearing Set for Transit Fare Modernization

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is moving forward with a major initiative to update its service infrastructure, hosting a pivotal public meeting today, January 29, 2026. The session is scheduled from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Ella B. Scarborough Resource Center. This meeting is the third in a series of community engagements designed to gather feedback on the agency’s proposed Fare Modernization Program.

Under the new proposal, CATS intends to transition away from its current complex structure of 40 different fare types in favor of a streamlined tap-to-pay system. The overhaul would introduce electronic validators on transit platforms, allowing riders to pay via mobile apps or contactless credit and debit cards. A significant point of discussion today will be the introduction of fares for the CityLYNX Gold Line streetcar. Historically free to ride, the streetcar would move to a $2.20 fare to match the Blue Line light rail. Officials state the changes are necessary to enhance security and ensure that all riders participate equally in the system's upkeep following a series of high-profile safety concerns on local rail lines.

Senior Affordable Housing Proposed for North Sharon Amity

Residents in East Charlotte have an opportunity to discuss a significant new development tonight at a community rezoning meeting. Starting at 6:00 p.m., representatives from Crosland Southeast will meet with the public at the Calvary Church of the Nazarene on North Sharon Amity Road. The meeting centers on Rezoning Petition #2025-126, which seeks to transform approximately 6.6 acres of land from a standard residential designation to a specialized district designed for higher-density housing.

The proposed project envisions a dedicated senior affordable housing community. If approved by the City Council later this spring, the development would feature a mix of stacked multi-family units and for-sale townhomes. District 5 Representative Juan Mazuera Arias and the Charlotte Planning, Design and Development Department are encouraging neighbors to attend this in-person session to review the site plans and discuss how the project fits into the city's broader goals for increasing the supply of housing for older residents on fixed incomes.

Ongoing Fiscal Planning and Regional Sessions

While the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners is currently in the midst of its annual budget retreat cycle, no formal public voting session is scheduled for today. Instead, county leadership is engaged in staff-level briefings as they prepare to finalize priority areas for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. Additionally, in the neighboring city of Monroe, the Economic Development Advisory Board is holding a special meeting at 5:15 p.m. at the Charlotte Monroe Executive Airport. That board is expected to adopt its formal meeting schedule for the remainder of the year and review local economic incentive grant programs that impact the greater Charlotte metropolitan area.
