City Notices: Winter Storm Preparedness and Public Health Advisories

Winter Weather Alert: Storm Forecast and Service Impacts
Governor Josh Stein has issued a state-level warning as North Carolina prepares for a significant winter storm expected to begin Friday evening, January 30, and continue through the weekend. Forecasters are currently predicting approximately eight inches of snow for the Charlotte area. Residents are urged to complete travel plans by Friday afternoon and remain off the roads once precipitation begins to allow Department of Transportation crews to treat highways with brine and salt.
In response to the forecast, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) will operate on a two-hour delay today, Friday, January 30. To ensure student safety before the expected snow arrival, all junior varsity basketball games have been canceled. Varsity games have been moved to earlier start times of 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to facilitate an early conclusion to Friday's athletic schedule. All CMS athletic events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday are canceled.
Public Health Notice: Measles Outbreak and Vaccination Clinics
Mecklenburg County Public Health has issued an advisory following the confirmation of two measles cases within the county. This local update comes amid a wider regional outbreak that has seen hundreds of cases across the Carolinas. Health officials have specifically identified a public exposure notice for individuals who attended events at Sardis Presbyterian School on January 17.
Health Director Dr. Raynard Washington is strongly encouraging residents to verify that they and their children are up to date on MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccinations. The health department is seeing a rise in vaccine-preventable diseases and notes that the MMR vaccine is widely available at local healthcare providers, retail pharmacies, and Mecklenburg County immunization clinics. Common symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic red rash.
