Official Health Advisory: Measles Outbreak Response

Mecklenburg County Public Health has issued an urgent advisory following a rise in measles cases within the Charlotte metropolitan area. As of late February 2026, health officials have confirmed 22 cases across North Carolina, with several active exposure sites identified in Charlotte. Residents who visited Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, the Chipotle on South Kings Drive, or the Goodwill locations on University Point Boulevard and West W.T. Harris Boulevard in early February are advised to monitor for symptoms such as high fever, cough, and a distinctive red rash.

Health officials emphasize that the MMR vaccine remains the most effective defense against the virus. The vaccine is widely available at local healthcare providers, retail pharmacies, and Public Health immunization clinics. Parents are especially encouraged to ensure children are up to date on their vaccinations, and those who may have been exposed are urged to contact their doctor via telephone before visiting a clinic in person to prevent further spread.

City Council and Public Forum Notice

The Charlotte City Council is scheduled to convene for a Business Meeting and Public Forum tomorrow, Monday, February 23, 2026. The session will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. This meeting provides an opportunity for residents to address the Council directly during the public forum segment on various community issues.

In recent legislative action, several high-profile rezoning decisions originally slated for mid-February have been officially deferred. Petitions including 2025-126 and 2025-094 are now scheduled for review during the March 23 zoning meeting. Residents interested in specific land-use changes for the South End and University City areas should take note of these adjusted timelines.

Public Services and Community Outreach

The City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services confirms that curbside collection for garbage, recycling, and yard waste will proceed on a normal schedule for Monday, February 23. Following the recent President’s Day holiday, which saw no service delays, residents should place their carts at the curb by their usual designated time.

Additionally, the Mecklenburg County Public Health department continues its "Live Well Meck Tour" this week. A community workshop is scheduled for Thursday, February 26, at the Matthews Community Center. This initiative seeks resident feedback on the 2026 Community Health Assessment to help shape future healthcare priorities and resource allocation across the county. Residents are invited to attend these free sessions to learn about local health data and share their perspectives on community wellness needs.

Notice Regarding Federal Benefit Programs

County leaders are currently assessing the potential impact of proposed federal funding adjustments to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Preliminary reports suggest that changes to eligibility and work requirements may affect local residents starting in the next fiscal cycle. The Board of County Commissioners is working with community partners to prepare for these shifts and will provide further updates as the budget process continues into the spring.
