What happened

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating multiple fatal crashes in east Charlotte after pedestrians were struck in separate incidents, prompting overnight road closures and continued follow-up by detectives.

In one case, first responders were called at about 1:12 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, to the 8600 block of Harrisburg Road for a reported pedestrian collision. Police located a Honda Accord stopped at Harrisburg Road and 1st Run Court. The driver, identified as 42-year-old Tony Derell Hawk, remained on scene. Medic found the pedestrian, 37-year-old Eric Neigenfind, unresponsive slightly off the roadway near the curb; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

What investigators have said so far

Police indicated the driver involved on Harrisburg Road was not impaired, and investigators did not believe speed was a factor in that collision. A toxicology report was pending for the pedestrian.

That investigation was reported as active and ongoing, with detectives asking any witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward. Police requested that the public contact the Major Crash Investigation Unit’s listed extension or provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

A separate fatal crash on Central Avenue

Authorities said the Harrisburg Road death occurred within hours of another fatal east Charlotte crash involving a pedestrian on Central Avenue. As of the initial public updates, police had not released the victim’s identity or details about what led up to the Central Avenue collision.

Separately, in a different east Charlotte case earlier in February, police reported a fatal pedestrian crash on The Plaza. That incident occurred around 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2026, in the 3900 block of The Plaza, where a 65-year-old man, Anthony Stewart, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not release additional circumstances in that case at the time of publication.

What comes next

Fatal-crash investigations typically continue after the scene is cleared, as detectives work to document vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and any available video or witness accounts. Investigators may also review toxicology results and determine whether any violations contributed to the crash.

  • The Harrisburg Road case remains open pending additional investigative findings, including toxicology reporting.

  • Police have not publicly detailed contributing factors for the Central Avenue fatality referenced in early Feb. 9 updates.

  • The Plaza fatal crash investigation has been confirmed, with limited information released so far.

Anyone who witnessed these incidents or has relevant video is urged to share it with detectives as investigations continue.
