Widespread Detours for Weekend Races

Commuters and residents in Uptown and surrounding neighborhoods should prepare for significant road closures and bus detours this Saturday, February 7, 2026. The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has confirmed multiple service adjustments to accommodate two major athletic events taking place today: the Cupid’s Cup 5K and The Big Game 4 Miler. These events will necessitate rolling road closures along major corridors, affecting several local bus routes throughout the morning and early afternoon.

Drivers are advised to avoid the race routes where possible and expect delays on surface streets near the center city. CATS riders should check the CATS-Pass app for real-time detour information, as many stops will be temporarily bypassed until the races conclude and the streets are cleared of participants.

Major Artery Alerts: Highway 74 Repair Work

Travelers heading southeast from Charlotte into Union County should exercise caution near Wingate. NCDOT crews and town staff have been working through the night to repair a significant water main break at the intersection of Highway 74 and College Street. While work is ongoing, lane closures on Highway 74 are expected to persist through the morning of February 7. Motorists are urged to utilize alternate routes to avoid congestion in the Wingate area, as this intersection serves as a primary artery for regional commuters.

Public Transport and Light Rail Status

Following a week of recovery from recent winter weather, CATS reports that most services have returned to a normal operating schedule. The Citylynx Gold Line, which saw temporary suspensions earlier this week for track maintenance and safety testing, resumed full service as of February 4 and is expected to run on its regular Saturday schedule today.

  • Blue Line: Operating on a normal Saturday schedule. However, commuters should note that a bus bridge is scheduled for tomorrow morning (Sunday, Feb 8) to facilitate the installation of the Mecklenburg County Pedestrian Skybridge.
  • Bus Services: Operating normally with the exception of the race-day detours mentioned above.
  • Express Lanes: Motorists are reminded that the I-485 Express Lanes are entering their final weeks of testing and construction, with the official opening slated for February 28, 2026.

Long-Term Project Updates

Commuters should also be aware of the NCDOT’s recent announcement regarding the I-77 South Express Lanes. The department has officially selected an elevated design for the 11-mile stretch from the Brookshire Freeway to the South Carolina state line. While active construction for this specific phase is not expected to impact daily traffic today, the project remains a focal point for regional planning and future transit-oriented development.
