Final days before North Carolina’s March 3 primary: voting options, IDs, and key deadlines in Charlotte

Primary Election Day is March 3; early voting ends Saturday, Feb. 28
Voters in Charlotte and across Mecklenburg County are entering the final stretch of North Carolina’s 2026 primary election. Primary Election Day is Tuesday, March 3, 2026, when polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
For voters who want to cast a ballot before Election Day, in-person early voting is already underway and ends Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026. During the early voting period, Mecklenburg County voters may vote at any early voting location in the county, rather than being limited to a single assigned precinct. On Election Day, voters must vote at their assigned precinct.
Deadlines that affect whether you can still vote
Several key deadlines have already passed. The voter registration deadline for the March 3 primary was Friday, Feb. 6, 2026, and the last day to change party affiliation for this election was also Feb. 6. Voters who are already registered should verify their current address, name, and precinct information before heading to vote.
For voting by mail, the deadline to request an absentee ballot for most voters was Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Voters who already have an absentee ballot can still complete and return it. The county’s deadline for an absentee ballot to be returned to the elections office is 7:30 p.m. on Election Day, March 3, 2026.
Election Day: Tuesday, March 3, 2026 (polls 6:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m.)
Last day of early voting: Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026
Absentee ballot return deadline: Tuesday, March 3, 2026, by 7:30 p.m.
Voting ID rules and what to do if you lack identification
North Carolina requires voters to present photo identification to vote in person, with exceptions and alternatives available under state rules. Voters who do not have an acceptable ID may have options that can allow them to vote, including casting a provisional ballot and completing required follow-up steps by the state’s post-election deadline.
Voters planning to vote close to Election Day should confirm what identification they will use and allow time for any required provisional-ballot follow-up.
What’s on the Mecklenburg County ballot
Mecklenburg County’s primary ballot includes local races that can shape countywide public safety and government operations. One of the most closely watched contests is the race for Mecklenburg County sheriff, featuring incumbent Sheriff Garry McFadden and multiple challengers. The outcome of the primary will determine which candidates advance to the general election in November.
How to avoid problems at the polls
Confirm your registration status, address, and assigned Election Day precinct before you go.
If voting early, remember you may choose any early voting site in Mecklenburg County; on March 3 you must use your assigned precinct.
If returning an absentee ballot, plan ahead to ensure it is received by 7:30 p.m. on March 3, 2026.
