Transit Alerts and Service Disruptions

Commuters relying on the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) should be aware of significant service changes today, Wednesday, February 4, 2026. The City of Charlotte has confirmed that CityLYNX Gold Line service remains suspended throughout the day. This suspension is due to lingering ice and snow on the tracks from the recent winter storm, with officials opting to keep the line closed to prevent damage to the infrastructure from traditional plowing methods.

While the Gold Line is down, CATS bus and LYNX Blue Line services have returned to their regular operating schedules. However, select local bus routes may still be utilizing designated snow routes where neighborhood road conditions remain hazardous. Additionally, the fare study public meeting originally scheduled for today at the Valerie C. Woodard Center has been postponed due to road conditions and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Major Roadway Conditions and Construction

The primary arteries, including I-77 and I-85, are reported as relatively clear, but motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution on secondary and neighborhood streets where patches of black ice and packed snow persist. In addition to weather-related hazards, several major construction projects are impacting traffic flow today:

  • I-485 Construction: While the new Express Lanes are slated to open later this month, contractors are currently performing final construction activities. Expect intermittent lane closures and shifts along I-485, particularly near East John Street and Weddington Road near Fincher Farm Road.
  • NC-115 (Potts Street): This route remains closed in both directions in the Cornelius area for ongoing bridge and road construction. Detours are in place.
  • Moores Chapel Road (SR-1601): Traffic is restricted to local vehicles only as construction continues on this stretch.
  • I-85 Shoulder Closures: Be alert for maintenance crews and shoulder closures between mile markers 44 and 46 in both directions through the Charlotte corridor.

Commuter Safety Advice

With temperatures remaining low, early morning drivers should be particularly wary of overpasses and shaded areas where ice is most likely to form. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) reminds all motorists to reduce speeds when traveling through active work zones, especially as crews finalize the I-485 interchange improvements. For those using the LYNX Blue Line or bus services, allow extra time for your commute to navigate icy platforms and sidewalks safely.
