Winter Storm Alert: Dangerous Road Conditions and Service Suspensions

Commuters across the Queen City are facing a complex and dangerous travel environment this morning, Monday, February 2, 2026. Following a historic winter storm that blanketed the region with 11 inches of snow over the weekend—matching records set in 1880—Charlotte is currently under a deep freeze. Public safety officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel as road crews work to clear ice from major thoroughfares and interstates. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through the morning hours, preventing natural melting.

Major Roadway Conditions and Arterial Closures

Travel remains extremely difficult on major arteries throughout the Charlotte metro area. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and NCDOT have reported the following major disruptions:

  • Independence Boulevard: Outbound lanes between I-277 and Briar Creek Road have been subject to extended closures due to hazardous conditions. Multiple vehicles were reported stuck on the uphill stretches exiting Uptown earlier this morning, and the area remains prone to black ice.
  • Interstate 85 Corridor: While the interstate remains open, travel is significantly slowed. Regional traffic continues to feel the ripple effects of a massive 100-car pileup in the Kannapolis area over the weekend, with lane clearing and safety inspections still active in several zones.
  • Secondary Roads and Snow Routes: Most residential and secondary streets remain untreated. Drivers who must travel are advised to use designated snow routes where plowing and salting efforts have been prioritized.

CATS Transit Service Alerts and Schedule Changes

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has significantly modified its operations for today. Commuters should be aware of both emergency weather adjustments and permanent route changes taking effect this morning:

  • Delayed Transit Start: LYNX Blue Line and all city bus services will not begin operating until 12:00 PM (noon) today. Once active, services are scheduled to run until midnight.
  • Service Suspensions: The LYNX Gold Line streetcar and all Express Bus services remain completely suspended for the day. CATS Micro services will operate on a limited schedule from noon until 6:00 PM.
  • Permanent Route Adjustments: Aside from the weather, new permanent schedule changes go into effect today for Route 11 (North Tryon), Route 16 (South Tryon), Route 22 (Graham Street), and Route 35 (Amazon) to improve long-term reliability.

County-Wide Closures and Public Services

Residents should also take note of the following local government and utility impacts as the city manages the storm aftermath:

  • Mecklenburg County Offices: All county offices and non-emergency services are closed today due to extreme cold and hazardous road conditions.
  • Solid Waste Collection: Garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection is suspended for Monday. Residents scheduled for pickup today should leave their bins at the curb for a Tuesday morning collection.
