Morning Commute Overview: A Slow Start

Charlotte commuters are facing a complex travel environment this morning, Tuesday, February 3, 2026, as the region continues to recover from a significant winter storm. While the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) reports that major arteries such as I-77, I-85, and I-485 have been largely cleared and treated, significant hazards remain on secondary roads and neighborhood streets. Black ice and lingering slush are the primary concerns for those departing earlier than the sunrise. Traffic volume is expected to be lighter than usual for a Tuesday morning, primarily due to widespread school and government facility closures.

Widespread School and Court Closures

The most significant impact on today's traffic volume comes from the total closure of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). District officials announced the closure late Monday to allow more time for buses to safely navigate neighborhood routes that remain treacherous. Neighboring districts, including Cabarrus, Union, and Gaston County schools, have also canceled classes. Additionally, the North Carolina Judicial Branch has noted that many court sessions across the region are either delayed or canceled. These closures are expected to significantly reduce congestion during the traditional 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM rush hour, particularly on high-traffic surface streets like Providence Road, Billy Graham Parkway, and North Tryon Street.

Public Transport and CATS Service Alerts

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has confirmed a return to regular service for most of its operations today, though with notable exceptions. Commuters should be aware of the following service statuses:

  • LYNX Blue Line: The light rail is operating on a normal Tuesday schedule. Crews worked through the night to clear platforms and ensure the tracks were free of ice.
  • Citywide Bus Service: Buses have returned to a regular schedule, though riders should expect minor delays on routes that utilize residential side streets where ice persists.
  • CityLYNX Gold Line: The streetcar remains suspended this morning. Significant ice accumulation on the tracks has made it impossible to safely operate the streetcars through Uptown and the surrounding corridors.
  • Special Transportation Services (STS): Services remain operational, though pick-up windows may be extended due to road conditions.

Ongoing Major Roadworks and Construction

Despite the weather, long-term infrastructure projects continue to influence lane configurations. In South Charlotte, the I-485 Express Lanes project is in its final stages, with completion expected next month. Commuters should remain alert for permanent lane shifts between I-77 and Independence Boulevard. Meanwhile, in Gaston County, initial mobilization for the I-85 widening project between Exit 23 and Exit 27 has begun, though active work may be limited today due to the recent storm. Drivers are urged to maintain a safe following distance as emergency crews continue to treat localized icy patches throughout the metropolitan area.
