Charlotte extends midseason momentum with win over Western contender

The Charlotte Hornets defeated the San Antonio Spurs 111-106 on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, at Spectrum Center, extending their winning streak to six games and improving to 22-28. San Antonio fell to 32-16 after a late rally came up short.

The game tipped at noon after being moved up from its original start time because of inclement weather in North Carolina. The earlier schedule created an uncommon daytime setting, but the pace and physicality resembled a typical high-stakes conference matchup.

Second quarter swings game as Charlotte takes control

San Antonio led 30-26 after the first quarter, but Charlotte’s 35-17 second-quarter advantage created separation that held up through the final horn. The Hornets carried a 61-47 halftime lead, helped by strong perimeter shot-making and a steady diet of free throws.

Charlotte’s Brandon Miller scored 26 points and reached the foul line repeatedly, finishing 9-for-9 on free throws. LaMelo Ball added 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, helping Charlotte maintain structure as the Spurs pressured the ball late.

  • Charlotte shot 20-for-22 at the free-throw line (91%).
  • San Antonio finished 17-for-19 at the line (89%) and hit 13 three-pointers.
  • Charlotte held a 51-36 rebounding edge, including 14 offensive rebounds.

Bench production and rebounding prove decisive

Charlotte’s bench provided a major lift, led by Collin Sexton with 21 points in 18 minutes. Sexton went 5-for-5 from three-point range, turning limited touches into high-impact scoring. Grant Williams added three points and four rebounds, while Ryan Kalkbrenner contributed six points, four rebounds and two blocks.

Moussa Diabate anchored the interior with 12 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four blocks, giving Charlotte rim protection and second-chance opportunities.

Spurs rally late but cannot retake the lead

San Antonio cut into a 17-point third-quarter deficit and pulled within two in the fourth, but could not regain the lead in the closing minutes. Dylan Harper led the Spurs with 20 points off the bench. Victor Wembanyama finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Stephon Castle recorded 16 points and nine assists.

Charlotte outscored San Antonio 35-17 in the second quarter, and the Spurs never fully erased the deficit despite a late push.

Charlotte’s ability to combine efficient bench scoring, a rebounding advantage and late-game composure allowed the Hornets to close out a win that continued their best stretch of the season.
