Huntersville police investigate drive-by shooting that struck property of Mecklenburg County commissioner candidate Aaron Marin

Gunfire reported at candidate’s home in north Mecklenburg

Huntersville police are investigating a shooting that sent multiple rounds toward the home of Aaron Marin, a candidate for the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, after shots struck property at his residence on Greenfarm Road on Monday, Feb. 16, 2026.

Marin, a Republican running for the District 1 seat, said he was inside the home with his wife and their two young sons when the shots were fired at about 7:45 p.m. No injuries were reported.

What investigators have confirmed so far

Information released publicly by law enforcement has been limited while the case remains active. A police incident report characterized the event as a drive-by shooting. Public details indicate rounds hit objects on the property, including vehicles and other items near the home.

Marin said the shots were directed at the property and that investigators responded to collect evidence. He also said doorbell-camera video from his home and nearby residences was provided to police as part of the investigation.

  • Location: Greenfarm Road area, Huntersville
  • Date and time: Monday, Feb. 16, 2026, about 7:45 p.m.
  • Reported impacts: property damage; no reported injuries
  • Investigation status: ongoing; no publicly identified suspects or motive

Candidate and police statements

Marin said he would not speculate about a motive while investigators work the case. He described the experience as traumatic for his family and said he plans to continue his campaign.

“We don’t feel safe … We don’t know what could happen,” Marin said in a televised interview.

Huntersville Police Chief Brian Vaughan has confirmed the incident occurred and said investigators collected evidence, while declining to provide additional details due to the active investigation.

Election context in Mecklenburg County Commission District 1

The District 1 seat covers parts of north Charlotte and the towns of Huntersville, Davidson and Cornelius. Marin is the only Republican in the race for the seat.

On the Democratic side, three candidates are competing in the March 3, 2026 primary: Jessica Finkel, Morris “Mac” McAdoo and Adam Pasiak. The winner of that primary is expected to face Marin in the Nov. 3, 2026 general election. The current officeholder, Elaine Powell, is not seeking re-election.

What remains unknown

Authorities have not publicly released a description of a suspect vehicle, the type of firearm used, or a potential motive. Police have indicated they are reviewing available video and other evidence. Anyone with information about the shooting has been encouraged to contact Huntersville police.
