What is being built and where

Drivers in southwest Charlotte have spent years navigating shifting traffic patterns on Interstate 485 as a long-running widening and toll-lane construction project advances toward completion. The work covers roughly 17 miles of I-485, adding one express lane in each direction between Interstate 77 and U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard) near Matthews, along with a new general-purpose lane in each direction between Rea Road and Providence Road.

The express lanes are designed as a managed, tolled option intended to provide more reliable travel times during periods of heavy congestion while maintaining free general-purpose lanes alongside.

Timeline: from 2019 construction start to early 2026 opening

Construction began in summer 2019. Over time, the completion schedule shifted as the project scope was revised and additional work was incorporated, while post-pandemic constraints affected labor availability and materials delivery. In May 2024, the project’s “substantial completion” target was moved into 2025, with remaining tasks including final lane shifts, bridgework at several crossings, final pavement lifts, and installation of tolling equipment.

As of January 6, 2026, state transportation officials said the I-485 Express Lanes are set to open to traffic in late February 2026, signaling that major construction impacts could begin easing once the corridor is placed into its longer-term traffic configuration.

Why the work affects southwest Charlotte commutes

Even when new capacity is the end goal, large highway reconstruction projects commonly create short-term disruption: lane closures, narrowed travel lanes, altered merge points, and periodic overnight work can reduce throughput and increase variability in travel times. On I-485, those effects have been especially noticeable for commuters and school traffic tied to major access points serving the Ballantyne area and neighboring communities.

Key work elements referenced by transportation officials have included bridge construction or widening at Johnston Road, Weddington Road, and Ballantyne Commons Parkway, as well as shifting general-purpose lanes into their final alignment and finishing roadway surfaces.

How the toll lanes will operate at opening

State officials have outlined that toll rates will initially be set by time of day and day of the week when the lanes open. After about 12 months of operation, the system is expected to transition to dynamic pricing, with rates fluctuating based on conditions such as demand and average speeds, with a stated operational goal of keeping express-lane traffic moving at or above 45 miles per hour.

Project facts at a glance

  • Location: I-485 between I-77 and U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard)
  • New capacity: one express (tolled) lane each direction; additional general-purpose lanes between Rea Road and Providence Road
  • Construction start: summer 2019
  • Opening target: late February 2026

What commuters should watch next: the transition from work-zone patterns to final lane configurations, and the activation of tolling equipment and pricing displays as opening approaches.
