I-485 Express Lanes Officially Open to Traffic

In a major milestone for south Charlotte commuters, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the N.C. Turnpike Authority have officially opened the new I-485 Express Lanes as of 6:00 a.m. this Saturday, February 28. The 18-mile stretch connects I-77 to U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard), aiming to reduce travel times and improve regional connectivity. For the first year of operation, these lanes will feature dynamic pricing, with toll rates adjusting based on real-time traffic volume to ensure a minimum speed of 45 miles per hour.

  • Drivers with an NC Quick Pass will receive a 50% discount on all tolls.
  • Dynamic pricing signs will display current rates before you enter the lanes.
  • High-occupancy vehicle (HOV) discounts are not available on this specific stretch; however, CATS vanpools and first responders may qualify for toll-free travel.

Early reports show traffic moving smoothly through the new corridor, though NCDOT officials remind drivers to remain alert as motorists adjust to the new traffic patterns near the interchanges at Johnston Road and Weddington Road.

Uptown Construction Alert: Brooklyn Village Avenue

Commuters heading into the city center should prepare for significant closures in the Uptown area. Brooklyn Village Avenue remains closed between Church and Mint streets as crews continue the complex process of dismantling a tower crane. This closure is expected to remain in place until 6:00 a.m. Monday morning. The crane was essential for the ongoing conversion of the former Duke Energy building into a mixed-use residential and retail space.

To avoid delays, officials recommend the following alternate routes:

  • Morehead Street
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
  • First Street

Southwest Charlotte Roadworks

In southwest Charlotte, a section of Wildlife Road is currently closed to allow NCDOT crews to install an 84-inch drainage pipe under the roadway. This project began earlier this week and is part of a four-week infrastructure improvement plan scheduled to conclude in early April. Local traffic is being detoured through Withers Cove Road, Crane Creek Drive, and Shopton Road West. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and watch for flaggers in the vicinity, as heavy equipment is operating near the roadway.

Public Transit and Busway Impacts

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has issued a notice regarding the Independence Boulevard Busway. The corridor is currently closed for emergency manhole repairs, forcing several express routes to utilize general-purpose lanes. Passengers on routes 40x, 46x, 52x, 64x, and 74x should expect minor delays and potential schedule adjustments throughout the day. While the busway is restricted, the Citylynx Gold Line streetcar and the LYNX Blue Line are currently operating on their standard Saturday schedules with no reported disruptions.
