Morning Commute Overview

Charlotte commuters are navigating a mix of planned infrastructure work and transit detours this Wednesday morning, February 25, 2026. While regional weather remains stable with moderate winds, several major projects are moving into critical phases that will affect travel times on both major interstates and local connector roads. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time to account for shifting traffic patterns as the city prepares for new infrastructure openings later this week.

Major Highway Roadworks: I-485 and I-85

On the I-485 outer loop, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is performing final striping and finishing work ahead of the express toll lane opening scheduled for this coming weekend. Motorists should expect intermittent left-lane closures between Nations Ford Road and Interstate 77. These closures are specifically targeting areas near bridge crossings and are scheduled to take place between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. today.

Additionally, a long-term construction project on I-85 continues to impact travel in the northern sections of the city. Shoulder closures remain in effect in both directions between Mile Markers 44 and 46. While all travel lanes currently remain open, the presence of heavy equipment and work crews near the roadway may cause minor rubbernecking delays during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

Local Road Closures: Wildlife Road

A significant local detour is now active in Southwest Charlotte following the closure of Wildlife Road. This closure is necessary for a four-week project to install an 84-inch pipe beneath the roadway and is expected to last through early April. NCDOT has established a signed detour route to assist residents and commuters. Drivers are being rerouted via Withers Cove Road, Crane Creek Drive, Limehurst Place, Eagle Oak Drive, and Shopton Road West. Increased congestion is anticipated on these secondary roads, particularly during neighborhood school drop-off periods.

Public Transit and CATS Service Alerts

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has maintained several active alerts for Wednesday riders. The Independence Boulevard Busway remains closed for essential manhole repairs. This closure continues to impact several express bus routes, including the 40x, 46x, 52x, 64x, and 74x. These buses have been diverted to general-purpose lanes, which may lead to arrival delays of 10 to 15 minutes. Furthermore, passengers on routes 11 (North Tryon), 16 (South Tryon), 22 (Graham Street), and 35 (Amazon) are reminded that routine service adjustments to schedules and timepoints took effect earlier this month to improve on-time performance.

Uptown Traffic Incident Report

In Uptown Charlotte, traffic flow is returning to normal following a high-profile intersection collision involving a customized SUV that occurred earlier this morning. While the vehicles involved have been towed and the roadway is clear, residual congestion may persist on the surface streets leading into the city center. Commuters entering the Uptown loop from the north and west should remain alert for slow-moving traffic as volume normalizes.
