La Vecina, an outdoor Latino fusion restaurant with walk-up taco stand, targets Plaza Midwood opening

A new open-air concept is taking shape on Central Avenue
A new Latino fusion restaurant called La Vecina is slated to open in Plaza Midwood in spring 2026, adding another food-and-drink option to a corridor that has seen rapid change and steady restaurant turnover in recent years. The project is planned for 1306 Central Ave., beside Moo & Brew and near the train tracks.
The restaurant is being developed by a partnership that includes leadership from Moo & Brew and the owners of Bocao Sushi. The team has spent roughly three years developing the concept and build-out, positioning the venue as a neighborhood-oriented spot designed around quick service and outdoor gathering.
What is planned: walk-up tacos, cocktails, and full-service dining—without indoor seating
La Vecina is built around a walk-up counter intended for ordering tacos and margaritas to go, while also offering full-service dining. The distinctive operational detail is that the dining experience is designed to be entirely outdoors; the project does not plan to include indoor seating. The space is expected to be “winterized” to support year-round use, even as it remains an open-air concept.
The venue expands on an existing small structure on the site. Plans call for a significantly larger footprint that includes a wraparound patio, making the outdoor area a primary feature rather than an accessory.
Design and atmosphere: a beachside taco-stand look
The project’s design is centered on a beachside aesthetic inspired by Tulum, with an open-concept layout intended to function as a casual neighborhood hangout. On weekends, the concept includes DJ programming, with music staged from behind the counter.
La Vecina translates from Spanish as “The Neighbor,” a name chosen to underline the project’s emphasis on being rooted in the surrounding community.
Menu direction: al pastor, mezcal-forward drinks, and brunch
The menu is expected to include shaved al pastor prepared on site and served on homemade tortillas, alongside mezcal-centric cocktails and punch bowls. The kitchen is also planned to offer slow-cooked, shareable dishes, plus Sunday brunch. Coffee service is part of the plan, with breakfast items such as tacos and burritos under consideration.
Why it matters for Plaza Midwood
La Vecina arrives as Plaza Midwood continues to evolve, with new projects and shifting retail mixes influencing what residents experience along Central Avenue and nearby nodes. The restaurant’s stated approach—outdoor-only seating, a walk-up taco stand designed for quick pickup, and an emphasis on “neighborhood” identity—signals a bet that casual, high-traffic service can coexist with an all-day social setting.
