Friday Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters in the Charlotte metropolitan area should prepare for a mix of scheduled maintenance and lingering environmental hazards this Friday, January 30, 2026. While the region continues to recover from the significant winter weather event earlier this week, transit systems have largely returned to standard schedules. However, specific maintenance projects on major arteries like I-77 and ongoing construction in the University City corridor will require extra travel time during the morning peak.

Maintenance Alert: I-77 Northbound in Mooresville

The most significant disruption for northern commuters today involves scheduled maintenance on I-77. Starting at 3:00 a.m. and expected to continue through 11:00 a.m. today, lanes are restricted on I-77 Northbound between mile marker 30.6 and mile marker 35. The toll lanes in this segment are closed, and motorists should expect a moving closure in the left general-purpose lane. This maintenance work is expected to cause bottlenecking for those traveling from the Lake Norman area toward Statesville during the heart of the morning commute. Drivers are encouraged to utilize general-purpose lanes and remain alert for slow-moving service vehicles.

Urban Roadworks and Street Closures

Within the city limits, South Tryon Street continues to experience impacts due to utility infrastructure improvements. The inside southbound lane of South Tryon Street remains closed for a broadband project, which may slow traffic heading away from the city center. Additionally, construction continues on the North Bridge project over I-85 in the northeast corridor. This project, which links University City to the University Research Park, involves ongoing work near Louis Rose Place and Doug Mayes Place. While the bridge provides vital future connectivity, current construction activity may cause intermittent shifts in traffic patterns near the I-85 interchanges at W.T. Harris Boulevard and Mallard Creek Church Road.

CATS Transit Status and Safety Warning

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has confirmed that all services, including the LYNX Blue Line and bus routes, have returned to a normal operating schedule as of Wednesday, following the winter storm disruptions. While schedules are back to 100% capacity, CATS officials urge riders to remain extremely cautious. With ground temperatures hovering near freezing this morning, platforms and bus stops may have developed isolated patches of black ice. Transit users are advised to allow for extra time when walking to stations and to be mindful of slippery spots on stairs and platforms.

Commuter Safety Tips

  • Watch for Black Ice: Despite clear skies, residual moisture from earlier in the week can refreeze on shaded bridge decks and overpasses.
  • Mooresville Congestion: If traveling north on I-77, expect delays until the 11:00 a.m. maintenance window concludes.
  • Construction Zones: Obey all posted speed limits on South Tryon and near the University City I-85 work zones to ensure the safety of road crews.
