Local Government Responds to Weather Impact with Emergency Sessions

In the wake of a historic snowstorm that impacted the Charlotte region over the past weekend, local government and education officials have scheduled emergency sessions for today, Wednesday, February 4, 2026. These meetings are aimed at addressing critical business and scheduling conflicts caused by the recent inclement weather and resulting government closures.

Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners Special Meeting

The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will convene a special meeting today at 3:00 p.m. at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. This session was added to the calendar following the cancellation of the board's regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, February 3, due to hazardous road conditions and extreme cold temperatures.

The agenda for this special session includes:

  • An informal session in Room CH-14 to discuss immediate infrastructure needs.
  • A closed session to address matters requiring confidential board consideration.
  • A formal call to order in the Meeting Chamber to take action on items that were delayed by the storm.

Officials have stated that the primary purpose of the meeting is to ensure the continuity of county business and to address urgent matters that require board approval before the next regularly scheduled cycle.

CMS Board of Education Emergency Virtual Meeting

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) Board of Education has also called for an emergency meeting this evening at 6:00 p.m. Unlike the commissioners' meeting, this session will be held virtually to ensure the safety of board members and the public as local roads continue to recover from the weekend's snowfall.

The board is expected to discuss the following topics:

  • Proposed changes to the 2025-2026 academic calendar to account for multiple missed instructional days.
  • Potential adjustments to mid-year graduation ceremonies, which were previously impacted by the weather.
  • Safety protocols for students and staff as the district prepares to resume a normal schedule.

Cancellations and Postponements

While the BOCC and CMS Board move forward with emergency business, other government activities remain on hold. The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) announced that the Fare Study public meeting originally scheduled for today at the Valerie C. Woodard Center has been postponed. City officials cited the safety of customers and community members as the top priority. A new date for the fare modernization discussion will be announced once road conditions have stabilized throughout the county.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the official websites of Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte for any further changes to public hearing schedules or government office hours as recovery efforts continue.
