Mecklenburg County Commissioners Hold First Budget Public Hearing Tonight

Commissioners Convene for Critical Fiscal Planning
Today, Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will gather for a regular meeting that marks a pivotal moment in the local legislative calendar. The session, scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, features the first official Budget Public Hearing for the upcoming fiscal cycle. This meeting, which typically occurs on the first and third Tuesday of each month, was rescheduled to Wednesday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday.
Budget Priorities and Public Testimony
The primary focus of tonight’s session is to receive public input on the county's financial priorities. As Charlotte continues to grapple with rapid growth and infrastructure needs, the budget hearing offers residents a platform to advocate for funding in areas such as:
- Public education and school facility improvements.
- Health and human services enhancements.
- Environmental stewardship and park expansions.
- Public safety initiatives and transit security.
The nine-member board, led by Chair Mark Jerrell and Vice Chair Leigh Altman, will listen to testimonies as they begin the process of shaping the FY2027 budget. Members of the public who signed up to speak will have the opportunity to address the board directly in the Meeting Chamber.
Concurrent Government Committee Activity
In addition to the full board meeting, several other government bodies are active in Charlotte today. The BOCC Economic Development Committee is holding a session earlier in the day to review regional investment strategies and workforce development programs. Simultaneously, the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) Policy Board is conducting its monthly meeting. The CRTPO session is of particular interest to city residents following recent high-profile discussions regarding transit safety on the light rail system and the ongoing expansion of the I-77 corridor.
Watch and Participate
The BOCC regular meeting and budget hearing will be held at 600 E. Fourth Street and will be broadcast live on the Government Channel for those unable to attend in person. Following tonight’s hearing, the board is scheduled to move into a series of budget retreats starting next week to further refine the county's spending plan based on the feedback received today.
