Opening date, corridor limits and what changes first

North Carolina transportation officials have set an opening date for the I-485 Express Lanes in south Charlotte, a long-running construction program that adds tolled express capacity and expands portions of the region’s busiest beltway. The lanes are scheduled to open to traffic at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026.

The express lanes run about 18 miles along Interstate 485 between Interstate 77 and U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard). The project adds one express lane in each direction along that stretch. Separate from the tolled lanes, the project also adds one general-purpose lane in each direction on I-485 between Rea Road and Providence Road, increasing total non-toll capacity on that segment.

How tolling will work at launch and what changes within a year

At opening, toll rates are expected to be set using a schedule based on vehicle length, time of day and day of week. Officials have said dynamic pricing will begin within roughly 12 months of opening. Under dynamic pricing, tolls vary with real-time traffic conditions and are intended to maintain express-lane speeds at or above 45 miles per hour.

Electronic payment through NC Quick Pass will be central to the system. Drivers without an NC Quick Pass account can still use the lanes but will pay higher rates than account holders. For standard two-axle vehicles and motorcycles under 22 feet, the posted rate applies to NC Quick Pass users, while non-account users are billed at double the posted rate. Longer two-axle vehicles (22 feet or more) and two-axle vehicles towing a single-axle trailer are charged at an “extended vehicle” rate, typically two times the standard rate. Vehicles with more than two axles, or two-axle vehicles towing trailers with two or more axles, are prohibited from using the express lanes.

Access points, segmentation, and early billing delays

The I-485 Express Lanes are divided into five toll segments with five entrances and five exits in each direction. Pricing signs are designed to display the amount an NC Quick Pass account holder will pay before entering a segment.

During the first few weeks of operation, transactions are expected to be manually reviewed to verify accuracy, which can delay charges appearing on customer accounts for several days after travel.

Construction after opening: what drivers should expect

Even after lanes open, contractors are expected to remain active along the corridor to complete final work. Transportation officials have indicated drivers should anticipate intermittent lane closures tied to items such as lighting and signage installation, roadway work, and continued toll-technology activities. Additional work is also expected to continue at specific nearby locations, including East John Street and around Weddington Road near Fincher Farm Road, where signal and interchange-area tasks are still being finalized.

  • Opening date and time: Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026 at 6 a.m.
  • Corridor: I-77 to U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard), approximately 18 miles
  • Initial toll setting: scheduled by vehicle length, time of day and day of week
  • Dynamic pricing: expected within about 12 months, with a 45 mph performance target

Drivers should continue to treat the corridor as an active work zone in the weeks around opening, with shifting conditions and intermittent closures possible.
