Morning Commute Overview

Charlotte commuters are navigating a changing landscape this Tuesday, March 10, 2026. While the long-awaited opening of the I-485 Express Lanes has provided some relief to south Charlotte traffic, new construction milestones in the South End and ongoing road closures in Pineville are requiring drivers and transit riders to adjust their typical routines. Major arteries like I-77 and I-85 are seeing typical morning volume, but localized work zones remain the primary cause of delays today.

I-485 Express Lanes and South Charlotte Roadworks

The I-485 Express Lanes, which officially opened to traffic on February 28, are now fully operational between I-77 and U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard). While these lanes offer more reliable travel times, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) warns that contractors are still performing final 'punch-list' activities. Commuters should expect intermittent lane closures and shifts during off-peak hours today for the installation of final signage and lighting. Additionally, work continues on East John Street, where paving and marking may cause brief delays.

In the Pineville area, Rodney Street remains completely closed between Westinghouse Boulevard and Royshall Lane. This closure is part of the final phase of I-485-related infrastructure upgrades and is not expected to reopen until mid-May. Drivers are advised to use the established detour via Downs Road, N.C. 51, and North Polk Street to bypass the work zone. Heavy equipment is active in this corridor, so extra caution is urged.

Public Transit: Blue Line and Busway Updates

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has officially begun the first phase of construction for the new South End light rail station, located between Remount Road and Tremont Drive. While trains are running on their normal schedules today following yesterday's single-tracking, riders should stay alert for upcoming service shifts. CATS is hosting a virtual public meeting today, March 10, at 12:30 p.m. to discuss construction impacts and the long-term project timeline. The meeting will be streamed live on the transit agency’s YouTube channel.

Bus commuters should also be aware that the Independence Boulevard Busway remains closed for essential manhole repairs. This closure continues to affect express routes 40x, 46x, 52x, 64x, and 74x. These buses are currently utilizing general-purpose lanes, which may lead to longer-than-usual travel times during peak congestion periods.

Long-Term Infrastructure Progress

In planning news, the Charlotte City Council approved $37.9 million yesterday to advance the design of the Red Line commuter rail. While this does not impact today’s traffic, it marks a significant step toward future transit options for the Lake Norman corridor. For those moving through the Uptown area, be mindful of site preparation beginning near the Iron District redevelopment between Uptown and South End, as increased truck traffic is expected near Bank of America Stadium throughout the week.
