Official Public Notice: City Council Budget Priorities and Regional Health Advisories
City Council Budget Workshop: Public Safety Funding
The Charlotte City Council held a strategic budget workshop this week to outline fiscal priorities for the upcoming year. Officials reported a slight increase in sworn police officer vacancies, which rose from 8.6% in 2025 to 9% in early 2026, primarily due to an average of 80 to 90 retirements occurring annually. To address these staffing gaps and maintain service levels for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Charlotte Fire Department, council members discussed the potential necessity of a future tax increase. The proposed funding would target fleet maintenance for emergency services, core city operations, and the management of rising public safety overtime costs.
Proposed Pause on I-77 Toll Lane Expansion
In response to significant community feedback and neighborhood opposition, a majority of the Charlotte City Council has expressed support for a formal pause on the Interstate 77 toll lane project. Ten of the eleven council members have signaled their intent to delay the $3.2 billion initiative, which aims to extend express lanes from the center city to the South Carolina border. The primary point of contention involves the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposal for elevated toll lanes through the city’s core. Council members are currently seeking a resolution to be presented to the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) to ensure meaningful community engagement before further construction steps are taken.
