Winter Weather Emergency: City and County Office Closures

Due to the significant winter storm impacting the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region, official notice is hereby given that all City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County government offices will be closed today, Monday, January 26, 2026. This closure includes administrative facilities in the towns of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill, and Pineville. Extreme sleet and ice accumulation have created hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages across the area. Residents are urged to prioritize safety and avoid all non-essential travel while emergency crews work to clear primary routes.

Solid Waste Services: Collection Suspension

Charlotte Solid Waste Services has officially suspended all collection for today, Monday, January 26. There will be no pickup of garbage, recycling, yard waste, or scheduled bulky items. This service interruption is a direct result of hazardous road conditions that prevent the safe operation of collection vehicles. Residential service for the remainder of the week will operate on a one-day delay. Residents who normally receive service on Mondays should place their carts at the curb on Tuesday morning. Please leave carts at the curb until they have been serviced, as crews work to catch up on the weather-related backlog.

CATS Transit Service Adjustments

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has issued an updated service schedule for Monday, January 26. Following a total suspension of service on Sunday, transit operations are anticipated to resume with a delayed start at 10:00 a.m. today. However, there will be no Express Bus Service operating today. Passengers should expect significant detours and delays on all active bus routes and the Blue Line as ice-clearing operations continue. Real-time updates on specific route cancellations or detours are available through the official CATS inclement weather tracking tools.

Public Health Alert: Measles Cases Confirmed

Mecklenburg County Public Health has issued a high-priority advisory following the confirmation of two measles cases within the county. The cases involve one adult and one unvaccinated child, both of whom are currently in isolation. This local alert comes amid a broader regional outbreak. Health officials are urging all residents to verify that their vaccinations, particularly the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, are up to date. Symptoms of the virus include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic red rash. Residents experiencing these symptoms should contact their healthcare provider by phone before arriving in person to prevent further community spread.

City Council Strategy Meeting Update

The Charlotte City Council’s Annual Strategy Meeting, originally scheduled to take place from January 25 through January 28, is currently impacted by the citywide office closures. While the council continues to monitor emergency weather response, scheduled public sessions at the Government Center are subject to the broader administrative shutdown. Citizens are encouraged to monitor the city’s official government channel for updates regarding rescheduled hearings or virtual session options.
