Service interruption scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Jan. 20

Charlotte Water has scheduled a planned service interruption for parts of south Charlotte on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, with crews expected to shut off water starting at 9 a.m. The affected area is centered around Barton View Boulevard near Old Pineville Road, a corridor that includes residential streets and nearby businesses.

Charlotte Water has estimated the interruption will last six to eight hours. Planned outages are typically used to isolate sections of the distribution system so crews can complete repairs, tie-ins, or other maintenance work that cannot be done safely while lines remain pressurized.

What residents should expect during and after the outage

During the shutoff window, customers in the affected area may experience no water service, reduced pressure, or intermittent pressure as crews isolate the work zone and later restore service. When water service returns, some households may briefly notice air in the lines or discolored water caused by changes in flow. City guidance for restoring normal household water use after an outage includes running cold water to clear trapped air and temporary discoloration.

Charlotte Water has encouraged residents to prepare ahead of time by storing water for essential needs during the outage window.

How to prepare before 9 a.m.

  • Fill containers with drinking water for household members and pets.
  • Set aside water for hygiene and basic cleaning, including handwashing.
  • Consider filling bathtubs or large containers for non-potable uses such as toilet flushing.
  • Delay running dishwashers or washing machines until service is restored and pressure is stable.

Staying informed and reporting problems

Charlotte Water provides outage notifications through its alert system, which can contact customers through phone calls, texts, and emails. Residents who are not the listed account holder at their address—such as renters or property managers—can also register to receive notifications. For service questions or to report a water emergency, the city’s 311 service and Charlotte Water’s customer line are available around the clock.

Charlotte Water has said it will provide an update when service is restored. Residents who continue to experience no water, unusually low pressure, or persistent discoloration after service is reported restored are encouraged to contact the city for follow-up.
