Public Health and Safety Advisories
Mecklenburg County Public Health is currently monitoring several regional health trends and has issued the following active advisories for residents:
Pediatric Vaccination Recommendations
Due to anticipated community transmission of measles in the Charlotte Metropolitan area, health officials recommend that clinicians consider early MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccination for infants aged 6 to 11 months who reside in or visit Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. Parents are encouraged to consult with their pediatricians to ensure children are up to date on all immunizations.
Respiratory Illness Alert
An active health advisory remains in effect following a cluster of pertussis (whooping cough) cases reported in the region this month. Residents should be vigilant for symptoms including severe coughing fits and high-pitched respiratory sounds. Vaccination remains the primary defense against the spread of this highly contagious bacterium.
Air Quality and Prescribed Burns
Residents may notice smoke or a hazy appearance in the air today due to scheduled prescribed burns conducted by Park and Recreation and other regional agencies. These controlled burns are used to manage invasive species and reduce fire hazards. Those sensitive to air quality should monitor conditions at local monitoring stations before engaging in strenuous outdoor activities.
Infrastructure and Roadway Updates
The Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) report the following active closures and traffic impacts for March 18:
Emergency Road Work: Wildlife Road
SR-1335 (Wildlife Rd) remains closed in both directions for emergency repairs. The closure is expected to continue through early April. Commuters are advised to utilize posted detours.
Construction Closures: Potts Street and Moores Chapel Road
In Cornelius, NC-115 (Potts St) remains closed in both directions for ongoing construction. Additionally, SR-1601 (Moores Chapel Rd) in Charlotte is restricted to local traffic only as infrastructure improvements continue. Heavy delays are expected during peak hours.
