Public Notice: Post-Storm Recovery and Community Health Advisories

Winter Weather Recovery and Service Updates
Following a second significant winter storm this week, the City of Charlotte continues its recovery efforts to ensure the safety and mobility of all residents. The Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) has successfully treated and cleared over 13,000 miles of roadway, utilizing nearly 100,000 gallons of salt brine. While major thoroughfares and emergency corridors are clear, residents are urged to remain cautious of black ice in shaded areas and on neighborhood side streets as temperatures fluctuate.
- Solid Waste Services: Curbside collection has resumed following earlier weather-related delays. Residents are advised to leave their bins at the curb until they are serviced, as crews work to catch up on the weekly schedule.
- Transit: The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has restored full service to the Blue Line and bus routes. Frontline teams have cleared station platforms and transit facilities of snow and ice accumulation.
- Water Services: Charlotte Water crews have concluded emergency repairs on 26 weather-related pipe breaks. Residents should report any new surfacing water or low-pressure issues to 311.
Public Health Advisories: Measles and Respiratory Illness
Mecklenburg County Public Health is currently monitoring multiple health concerns impacting the region. Following a recent detection of measles traces in local wastewater samples, health officials are urging families to ensure they are up to date on MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccinations. This advisory follows a significant outbreak in neighboring South Carolina. Additionally, the region remains in the "purple" or highest category for influenza activity, with respiratory illness rates reaching their highest levels in nearly three decades.
Local healthcare providers have also been issued a health advisory to include mpox in differential diagnoses for patients presenting with consistent symptoms, as part of an ongoing effort to mitigate a recent rise in new cases.
Public Service Announcements and Opportunities
The City of Charlotte is currently accepting applications for several community programs designed to promote economic and creative growth:
- 2026 Creative Pool: Local professional creatives are invited to apply for the 2026 Creative Pool. This program connects artists with opportunities to work on various city projects throughout the year.
- Learn2Earn Program: The city is expanding its digital inclusion efforts through the Learn2Earn initiative, providing technology training and hardware access to help close the digital divide for residents.
- 2040 Community Area Plans: Planning officials will host a series of upcoming community events to gather feedback on the 14 draft Community Area Plans. These plans are vital for implementing the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
