South End Rail Alerts and I-85 Bridge Construction Headline Monday Commute
Monday Commute Overview for March 9, 2026
Good morning, Charlotte commuters. As we begin the second week of March 2026, several major infrastructure projects are reaching critical milestones, affecting both rail users and motorists on our major arteries. While weather conditions remain favorable for travel, significant construction activity in the South End and along the I-85 corridor requires extra attention this morning.
Major Transit Alert: CATS South End Station Project
The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has officially kicked off the first major phase of construction for the new Blue Line light rail station in South End, located between Remount Road and Tremont Drive. While trains are running on a normal schedule this morning, commuters should be aware of the following:
- Public Open House Today: CATS is hosting an in-person open house this evening, Monday, March 9, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Charlotte Urban Design Center. This is a vital session for riders to learn about the upcoming single-tracking and full service shutdowns scheduled for April.
- Rail Trail Impacts: Though the primary closure of the Rail Trail is not slated until next month, preparatory work near the track crossing between Publix and Cortland South End may cause minor pedestrian detours today.
Roadworks and Highway Delays
On the roads, construction remains the primary cause of slow-downs. Significant updates include:
- I-85 Bridge Work: Crews continue work on two new bridges spanning I-85 between Harris Boulevard (Exit 45) and Mallard Creek Church Road (Exit 46). Expect narrowed lanes and a reduced speed limit in this zone throughout the day.
- Uptown Crane Activity: Continued crane removal and assembly projects in the Uptown area have led to intermittent lane closures. Motorists are advised to avoid the blocks immediately surrounding the new Iron District developments to prevent gridlock.
- I-485 Express Lanes: The 17-mile widening project between Pineville and Matthews is in its final stages. While most lanes are open, minor shoulder work continues to affect merging near the US-74 interchange.
- US-74 Maintenance: Starting at 1:00 p.m. today, NCDOT will begin logo sign maintenance on US-74 East. A shoulder closure is expected, which may cause rubbernecking delays through the early afternoon.
Public Transport & CATS Bus Service
Local bus routes are currently operating on their regular schedules. However, CATS warns that increased traffic density near South End construction sites may cause minor delays for routes serving South Boulevard. Commuters are encouraged to use the CATS-Pass app for real-time tracking and to monitor official social media accounts for sudden service disruptions.
Drive safely and allow an extra 10–15 minutes if your route involves the I-85/I-485 interchanges or the South End corridor.
