Morning Rail Disruptions and Skybridge Installation

Commuters and students relying on the LYNX Blue Line this morning should prepare for significant service adjustments. Today, Sunday, February 8, the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is initiating the installation of the Mecklenburg County Pedestrian Skybridge between the Sugar Creek and Old Concord stations. Due to the complexity and safety requirements of this overhead work, rail service is currently suspended between the 36th Street and UNC Charlotte (UNCC) Main stations.

  • Bus Bridge: A supplemental bus bridge is in operation between 36th Street and UNCC stations to transport passengers through the affected area.
  • Timing: These rail restrictions began at 4:30 a.m. and are expected to remain in place until approximately 7 a.m.
  • Normal Operations: Regular rail service continues to operate without interruption between the I-485 and 36th Street stations.

I-485 Construction and Highway Conditions

While the highly anticipated I-485 Express Lanes are not scheduled to officially open until later this month, drivers will still encounter intermittent disruptions on the southern loop today. Contractors are performing final paving, signage installation, and toll technology testing. Motorists should be alert for lane shifts and temporary closures at the following locations:

  • East John Street: Expect intermittent lane closures and flagging operations as crews finalize asphalt paving and pavement markings.
  • Weddington Road: Near the Fincher Farm Road intersection, drivers may encounter delays due to ongoing signal installation and interchange refinement.
  • I-485 Mainline: Watch for work crews between I-77 and U.S. 74 as final lighting and tolling equipment are positioned.

Uptown Event Congestion and Bus Detours

Traffic in the Center City is expected to be heavier than usual for a Sunday morning due to several high-profile events. The Mid-Atlantic Boat Show is concluding its final day at the Charlotte Convention Center, drawing significant crowds and increased vehicle volume near South College and East Stonewall Streets. Additionally, the Belk Theater is hosting two performances of the Broadway musical The Outsiders at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to use the Bank of America Center Parking Garage, which is offering a $10 preferred rate.

Finally, several bus routes remain on detour this morning following the Cupid’s Cup 5K and The Big Game 4 Miler. If you are traveling through the Dilworth or Elizabeth neighborhoods, check the CATS-Pass app for real-time routing changes as roads reopen following these races.
