A Charlotte brewery prepares for a new chapter after months of disruption

Sycamore Brewing, one of Charlotte’s best-known brewery brands of the past decade, is in the process of being sold and will reopen its South End taproom under a new name: Club West. The reopening is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 11 a.m., with operations resuming at the company’s established South End location.

The ownership transition follows a period of turmoil that began in December 2025, when co-founder and former co-owner Justin Brigham was arrested and later indicted. Court records cited in prior coverage list charges that include statutory rape of a child under 15 and first-degree burglary. Brigham has remained in the Stanly County jail on bond conditions reported by local television outlets, with an arraignment scheduled for March 30, 2026.

Who is buying the brewery, and what is changing

Sycamore co-founder Sarah Taylor has announced an agreement to sell the brewery to Brad Bergman, the company’s longtime director of brewery operations. Bergman has worked at the brewery for roughly eight years and is expected to take over as vice president of operations under the Club West brand.

The change is not yet final. The transaction is pending regulatory approval, which Bergman has said could take several weeks. If approved, he is expected to acquire full ownership and assume management control. The parties have not disclosed additional financial terms of the sale.

  • Brand: Sycamore Brewing is rebranding as Club West.
  • Location: The reopening is in South End, at the existing taproom site.
  • Timing: Taproom reopening is scheduled for March 14, 2026.
  • Ownership: A sale agreement has been announced; the closing is subject to regulatory sign-off.

Background: closure, rebranding steps, and business fallout

The South End taproom closed on January 5, 2026. In the weeks after the December arrest, retailers and bars across the Carolinas removed Sycamore products from shelves and taps, disrupting a distribution footprint that had extended well beyond Charlotte.

State filings also reflected a formal step toward rebranding: the company’s limited liability entity changed its name to Club West earlier this year, with Taylor listed as the managing member in public records at the time. Separately, the brewery’s planned expansion to Cotswold Village did not proceed; the lease for that project was terminated after the controversy and subsequent operational changes.

Taylor has stated she intends to step away from the business after assisting briefly during the transition, describing a plan to focus on family and personal well-being while acknowledging broader impacts from the case.

Staffing and near-term outlook

As the South End taproom prepares to resume service, management has reported that dozens of employees were retained during the closure period, with headcount increasing ahead of reopening. The coming weeks will determine how quickly the rebranded operation stabilizes under new ownership, and whether the regulatory process concludes on the timeline projected by management.
