Uptown Road Closures for Crane Removal

Commuters heading into Uptown Charlotte this Friday morning should prepare for significant detours near the city center. A major closure is currently in effect on a portion of Brooklyn Village Avenue to allow crews to safely dismantle and remove a tower crane. According to the Charlotte Department of Transportation, this work began earlier this week and is expected to continue through next week. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes such as 3rd Street or 4th Street to avoid bottlenecks in the immediate area.

Independence Boulevard Busway Impact

Public transit users and motorists along the Independence Boulevard corridor are facing ongoing disruptions due to emergency infrastructure work. The Independence Boulevard Busway remains closed to facilitate manhole repairs. This closure has a direct impact on several Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) express routes, which are being rerouted to general-purpose lanes. Commuters on the following lines should expect potential delays of 10 to 15 minutes:

  • 40x - Albemarle Road Express
  • 46x - Northridge Express
  • 52x - Idlewild Road Express
  • 64x - Independence Boulevard Express
  • 74x - Union County Express

CATS officials advise riders to check the CATS-Pass app for real-time tracking, as buses navigating general traffic may face higher-than-usual congestion during the morning peak.

East Charlotte Signal Synchronization Project

Travelers in East Charlotte should watch for localized lane shifts and short-term disruptions along the stretch from Robinson Church Road to Harrisburg Road. A $500,000 fiber optic installation project is currently underway to connect and synchronize traffic signals. While this project aims to improve long-term traffic flow, current construction activity is causing intermittent slow-downs near the Robinson Church Road widening zone. Crews are working to keep at least one lane open in each direction, but heavy machinery near the shoulder remains a factor for morning travelers.

Highways and Long-term Construction

On the major arteries, NCDOT maintenance crews are active on I-85 South. Motorists should be aware of shoulder closures between mile markers 43 and 42 for routine maintenance and drainage work. While all general-purpose lanes remain open, the presence of work crews often leads to rubbernecking delays during the rush hour window. Additionally, long-range planning for the I-77 Express Lanes expansion continues to dominate transport discussions, though no active lane closures related to the proposed vertical decking are scheduled for today.

Commuter Advice

Given the combination of Uptown closures and transit detours, the best strategy for Friday is to allow an additional 20 minutes for cross-town travel. If your route involves the Robinson Church Road area, consider using W.T. Harris Boulevard as a bypass to avoid construction-related signal delays.
