Adverse Weather Impacting Saturday Commutes

The National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning for the Charlotte region, significantly affecting travel plans for Saturday, January 24, 2026. While precipitation is expected to intensify throughout the afternoon, road conditions are already deteriorating. Local authorities are advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel as icing on bridges and overpasses becomes a primary safety concern. In response to the weather, UNC Charlotte has moved to Condition 2 (suspended operations) as of noon today, with all campus activities canceled through Monday.

Major Schedule Changes at Spectrum Center

Commuters heading toward Uptown should be aware of a major schedule shift for today’s main event. The NBA has announced that the Charlotte Hornets game against the Washington Wizards at Spectrum Center, originally scheduled for 6:00 PM, has been moved up to a 12:00 PM tip-off. This change is intended to allow fans and arena staff to return home before the most severe ice accumulation begins. Expect heavy, concentrated traffic around the Trade Street and Caldwell Street corridors during the early afternoon as the game concludes and spectators exit the Uptown area.

Public Transit Disruptions and Suspensions

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has implemented several service adjustments to ensure public safety during the storm:

  • Gold Line Streetcar: Service is fully suspended for today, Saturday, and tomorrow, Sunday, due to anticipated icing on the tracks and overhead power lines.
  • LYNX Blue Line: Trains are currently running as weather conditions allow. However, the planned installation of a pedestrian skybridge between the Sugar Creek and Old Concord stations, originally set for this weekend, has been postponed.
  • Bus Detours: Riders on Routes 3 and 23 should prepare for delays and rerouting. A water main repair at the intersection of The Plaza and Milton Road has forced a detour that remains in effect until further notice.

Ongoing Roadworks and Long-term Construction

In addition to weather-related hazards, several long-term construction projects continue to impact local arteries. Work remains active on the southern stretch of I-485 between I-77 and Independence Boulevard. While crews are in the final stages of the Express Lanes project, commuters should look for lane shifts and reduced shoulder space. In the University area, heavy congestion is reported on Mallard Creek Road due to ongoing redevelopment and infrastructure improvements near David Taylor Drive. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speeds, and maintain significant following distances throughout the day.
