Morning: Navigating the Mist and Early Showers

Charlotte residents waking up this Friday, February 27, 2026, will find a somber and damp start to the day. The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for the Northwest Piedmont and surrounding Charlotte areas, warning of dense fog that is expected to linger until the mid-morning hours. Visibility at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport was reported as low as one mile in the early pre-dawn hours, making the morning commute particularly hazardous for those on the I-77 and I-85 corridors.

Alongside the fog, there is a 40 percent chance of light showers between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. These are not expected to be heavy downpours, but rather a persistent drizzle that will keep the pavement slick. Temperatures during the morning hours will hover in the low 50s, requiring a light jacket and a bit of extra time for travel.

Afternoon: Peak Temperatures and Persistent Clouds

As the clock nears noon, the patchy fog and rain chances are predicted to taper off, giving way to a mostly cloudy afternoon. While we won't see much of the sun today, the air will remain relatively mild for late February. High temperatures are forecasted to reach approximately 56 to 57 degrees Fahrenheit. Winds will be light, coming from the northeast at 6 to 8 mph, adding a slight crispness to the air without creating a significant wind chill.

For those planning a lunch break outdoors or an afternoon stroll through Uptown, the weather will be dry but grey. The lack of direct sunlight means temperatures will feel fairly consistent throughout the afternoon, peaking around 3:00 p.m. before the gradual descent into the evening hours.

Evening: The Return of the Fog

As the sun sets at 6:17 p.m., the clouds will remain thick over the Charlotte metro area. Friday evening plans should account for cooling temperatures, with the mercury dropping into the high 40s by late evening. Forecasters are also keeping a close eye on the return of patchy fog, which is expected to develop again after 9:00 p.m.

The overnight low is projected to settle around 45 degrees. While the dampness of the morning will have largely evaporated, the humidity will remain high, keeping the air feeling heavy. Looking ahead, this cloudy Friday serves as a transition day, with clearer skies and significantly warmer temperatures expected as we move into the first weekend of March.

  • Morning: Fog and 40% chance of rain; temps near 52°F.
  • Afternoon: Overcast skies; high of 57°F.
  • Evening: Mostly cloudy with returning fog; low of 45°F.
  • Notice: Dense fog advisory in effect until 10:00 a.m.
