Groundbreaking Milestone at Eastland Yards

Today, Friday, March 6, 2026, marks a pivotal moment for East Charlotte as city and county officials gather for the official groundbreaking of the Eastland Sports Campus. Scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the former Eastland Mall site, the ceremony represents a major step forward in the 80-acre master-developed project known as Eastland Yards.

Led by developer Crosland Southeast in partnership with the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, the redevelopment project has seen crews transforming the long-vacant site into a mixed-use destination since 2022. The Sports Campus is one of five major components currently under development. Local leaders expect the campus to serve as an economic catalyst for the surrounding neighborhoods, providing both recreational facilities and a new anchor for community activity. Residents can attend the event in person or view a live stream via the city’s official digital channels.

Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority Convenes for Retreat

While construction begins in the east, transit officials are focusing on long-term infrastructure at the Harris Conference Center. The Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority (MPTA) is holding an all-day workshop today, running from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This session is designed as a strategic retreat to evaluate the future of the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS).

Agenda items for the retreat include:

  • Strategic planning for the 2055 Transit System Plan.
  • Bylaw reviews and organizational structure updates following the MPTA’s inaugural meetings last winter.
  • Financial updates regarding regional transit funding and intergovernmental cooperation.

The workshop is being streamed live on the CATS YouTube page, allowing the public to monitor discussions that will likely shape the city's commuting landscape for the next decade. As the city continues to grapple with the expansion of the Silver Line and Red Line projects, today’s deliberations are expected to provide clarity on prioritization and timeline adjustments.

Community Deadlines and Public Safety Events

In addition to major policy meetings, today is the final day for residents to participate in the city’s “Buckets for Better Trees” initiative. The City Arborist Group has set a deadline of 5:00 p.m. today for RSVPs to their upcoming mulching and watering workshop. The outreach program is part of the city’s broader environmental stewardship goal to maintain the local tree canopy.

Finally, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and local organizers are launching the FOODEES Fest at SouthPark Mall this afternoon. Starting at 1:00 p.m. at Symphony Park, the event is listed on the city's specialized events calendar. While primarily a community festival, it involves significant coordination with CMPD’s Providence Division for traffic management and public safety through the weekend.
