Friday Morning Traffic Overview

As we head into the final commute of the work week on Friday, March 6, 2026, Charlotte drivers should prepare for significant disruptions on major interstate corridors. While typical Friday morning volume is present across the Queen City, specific construction projects and utility repairs are creating bottlenecks that will likely extend travel times during both the morning and afternoon rush hours. Authorities are urging commuters to allow for an extra 15 to 20 minutes of travel time, particularly when navigating the northern and southwestern portions of the city.

High-Impact Interstate Disruptions

The most significant impact today is located on I-77 South. Officials have reported high-impact closures in the express lanes between mile markers 14 and 11. This includes the closure of the direct connect ramp from I-85 South. Additionally, a mobile lane closure is affecting the left general-purpose lane in this area. With one of three lanes closed, heavy congestion is expected throughout the morning. On I-85, maintenance crews are active between mile markers 46.2 and 46.6. Shoulder closures are in effect for both northbound and southbound traffic as teams complete maintenance work, which is scheduled to wrap up by 1:00 PM today.

Local Roadworks and Long-Term Projects

  • Wildlife Road: In Southwest Charlotte, a critical section of Wildlife Road remains closed for a major pipe replacement project. Drivers are being detoured through Withers Cove Road and Shopton Road West. This work is expected to continue through early April.
  • South Tryon Street: Motorists should expect delays on South Tryon Street, where the inside southbound lane is closed for ongoing broadband infrastructure installation.
  • Yorkmont Road (SR-1156): Shoulder closures are in place for both directions as maintenance crews finalize work. This is expected to be cleared by early afternoon.
  • Love Mill Road Area: Very specific bore work is taking place today on the road shoulders in this vicinity. A detour is active utilizing Rock Hole Road and N.C. 218.

Public Transport Alerts and CATS Updates

For those utilizing the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), please be aware that the Independence Boulevard Busway remains closed for essential manhole and road repairs. This closure directly impacts several express routes, including the 40x, 46x, 52x, 64x, and 74x. Riders should check the CATS app for real-time stop adjustments and potential delays. Furthermore, the Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority (MPTA) is holding an all-day workshop today. While this does not disrupt current rail or bus schedules, commuters should be aware of increased activity around the Harris Conference Center throughout the day.

Safe Driving Reminders

With ongoing resurfacing projects starting this month on Mallard Creek Church Road and Harris Boulevard, work zones are becoming increasingly common. Please remember to reduce your speed, put down mobile devices, and watch for flaggers and digital message boards. Stay safe and enjoy your weekend, Charlotte.
